Divorce is an emotional journey, and it’s also a significant business transaction. Separating your finances and assets from your spouse’s can be daunting, but with a clear plan- and our support, you’ll navigate it like a pro💪. Here’s where you start taking control of your financial future, one step at a time.

Wrangle those important papers digital or analog style

Time to find lots of paperwork and statements- think bank accounts, retirement accounts, deeds, titles, tax returns, pay stubs – and on and on.🔥 Pro Tip 🔥 Download our ultimate guide to keep track of it all.

For our Digital Ladies –

  • Centralize ALL documents in one secure platform (IE google drive, drop box)
  • Organize it and keep it organized (we promise it will pay off in the long run when you can quickly send off what’s needed to your lawyers and support team)
  • Share it with the appropriate people

For our Analog Ladies –

  • Grab those file folders, post-its, labels, and filing cabinet
  • Organize your documents using labels or color-coded system (basically whatever makes the most sense to you)
  • Create and maintain a master index so it’s easy to share
  • 💫 Bonus if you have a printer/scanner so you can email docs when needed

What are the “important papers” and where do I get them?

Short answer: everywhere. Good news – you can find everything you need! Some of it will take longer to find than others. Here’s a list of some of the documents you’ll need to gather. (Note – download our checklist for a more comprehensive list and easy way to keep track!)

Prepare to tell your people

Acknowledge that this can be scary. Sharing the news and showing vulnerability can feel daunting. And, we know you can do it. Take a moment to clarify your feelings and the message you want to share. Prepare for a range of reactions and remind yourself that their reactions have nothing to do with you. Stay true to yourself and honor your emotional boundaries —this is your story and only you know what is best.

“Your people” includes your kids and we have some tips for telling your kids. Remind yourself that your primary goal is to reassure them that they are loved, this isn’t their fault, and both parents will continue to be present in their lives. Keep the conversation age-appropriate, honest, and free from blame, focusing on the fact that while the marriage is changing, your love for them remains constant and unshakeable.

Build your professional support team

Creating a strong support team is essential as you navigate your divorce. ID key professionals who can help you through this process such as a mediator, divorce attorney, CDFA and therapists. (**Hint – go to our Find A Professional page) Each of these experts brings valuable insights and guidance tailored to your unique situation.

Look for professionals who are both experienced in divorce AND align with your values, approach, and goals. Make sure you feel comfortable and understood by them. Your support team is there to empower YOU during this transition. Your team is your lifeline. Choose wisely, communicate clearly, and don’t be afraid to make changes if something doesn’t feel right.

By preparing yourself emotionally, communicating openly with your loved ones, and building a strong support team, you’re taking proactive steps toward a brighter future. Divorce can be hard. You’re not alone.
