Celebrities and media frequently throw around the term “prenup” – but what does it actually mean? You have questions. We have answers.
What’s a prenup and who gets them?
A “prenup”, or prenuptial agreement, is a legal contract you and your partner set up before you get married. Also called a “premarital agreement.” It lays out how your property and finances will be managed during the marriage—and what happens if things don’t work out. Think of it as setting clear expectations for both of you, just in case.
The big benefit? Financial protection if the marriage ends. A prenup can help prevent any messy or unfair division of assets later. And no, they’re not just for the ultra-rich! More and more everyday couples are using prenups to make things fair and clear from the start.

What’s a postnup and who gets them?
A “postnup”, or postnuptial agreement, is a legal contract you and your partner sign AFTER the wedding. It covers similar topics, like how property, finances, alimony (in some states), inheritances, and business interests would be handled if you and your spouse divorced.
The main difference? Timing. A prenup is signed before marriage, a postnup is signed after marriage.
